"More Hits" seems to be the battle cry of Website owners. There are many definitions of what a hit is. This leads to confusion and sometimes even deception, when comparing different websites and discussing expectations.
Some refer to every file accessed from a page, as a hit. Using this definition, clicking on a webpage which contains 5 images, would result in 6 hits. One for the page itself and five for the images.
Others feel a hit is simply what is represented by a hit counter on their home page. Of course if someone has your site bookmarked, to a page other than your home, a hit will not be registered on a hit counter.
Finally, the way Internet Traffic Strategies, LTD refers to hits is by counting them as an individual visit to your entire website. This unit of measure for a hit is the most accurate and assures an "apples to apples" comparison. Hits discussed in this way are often referred to as "sessions" or "uniques". To eliminate confusion, when discussing your hits, please be sure that everyone knows exactly which type of hit you are referring to. Otherwise you may find yourself in a meaningless exchange of ideas.
